Friedrich Nerly d.Ä. research project

2018 restoration of a major work of Friedrich Nerlys Roman period was completed  restauriert: The painting  "Aqua Claudia" dating from 1836 in the collection of  Kunsthalle Bremen.
The large format painting was Nerlys last work finished before settling in Venice. Nerly discovered the motiv of the monumental ruins of this roman watercourse for landscape painting early on, that gained huge popularity amongst painters into the 20th century.

Nerly was an eminent talent of the landscapists of the early 19th century. He was an especially apt painter of pleinair oil sudies.
Examination of the Bremen "Aqua Claudia" during restoration yielde a lot of information on his work process, ow published in the exhibition catalogue  "Natur und Antike Der Romantiker Friedrich Nerly in Rom 14.03. – 05.07.2026" in der Kunsthalle Bremen (ISBN: 978-3-7774-4659-2). During the research project on the Nerly estate at the Angermuseum Erfurt we were also entrusted with restoration and examination of the related oil study of the "Aqua Claudia"amongst other studies by Nerly.

 Findings on Nerlys training and his use of pleinair studies have been published in the proceedings " Reframing Friedrich Nerly.Landschaftsmaler, Reisender, Verkaufstalent". C.
